Here is the only rule of Tend & Tell:
Be honest.
That's it. That's the whole thing.
No minimum word count. No required format. No expectation that what you write is insightful, resolved, or ready for anyone else to read. You don't have to share it publicly. You don't have to clean it up before it hits the page. You don't have to arrive at a conclusion.
One line. Unfinished is fine. Messy is fine. Half a thought that trails off mid-sentence is fine.
That's Tend & Tell; and every Friday at Leaf & Latch, we start it.
Why we built this
Most journaling spaces online reward performance.
The most aesthetic spread. The most profound insight. The most carefully worded reflection that somehow manages to be vulnerable and aspirational at exactly the same time.
It's exhausting. And more importantly; it's the opposite of what journaling is actually for.
Your journal is not a performance space. It was never supposed to be. It's the one place that exists specifically for the things you haven't figured out yet, the feelings you haven't named, the half-truths you're still circling, and the honest mess of being a human who is figuring it out in real time.
Tend & Tell exists to protect that.
When Amber started Leaf & Latch, the entire foundation was built on one belief: that journaling changes things, but only when it's honest. Not when it's pretty. Not when it's structured. Not when you're performing growth for an audience; including yourself.
And so every Friday, we show up with one real line. Not a lesson. Not a breakthrough. Just whatever was true this week.
What "tending" actually means here
At Leaf & Latch, we use plant philosophy as a framework for how we talk about growth, healing, and self-awareness; because plants taught us something important.
Tending is not fixing.
Tending is paying attention. It's noticing what you need, responding with care rather than criticism, and showing up consistently even when nothing dramatic is happening.
A plant doesn't grow faster because you stare at it harder. It grows because someone keeps showing up; watering it, checking the light, adjusting when something looks off; without demanding immediate results.
Tend & Tell is that practice in written form.
You don't have to have a breakthrough this Friday. You just have to show up and write one true thing.
How it works
Every Friday, Amber posts a Tend & Tell prompt on Instagram; a single question or invitation. She shares her own line first. Then the community is invited to share theirs in the comments, in their own journals, or not at all.
There is no right way to participate.
You can:
- Drop your line in the comments
- Screenshot the prompt and answer it privately in your journal
- Read everyone else's lines and feel less alone without writing a word
- Come back to the same prompt three weeks later when you finally know what you want to say
All of these count. None of these are wrong.
The only thing Tend & Tell will never ask you to do is perform.
This week's prompt
Your roots are talking. What are they saying that you've been too busy to hear?
Write one line. It doesn't have to be finished. It doesn't have to be good. It just has to be true.
If you want to share it; drop it in the comments on this week's Tend & Tell post on Instagram. If you want to keep it; keep it. Your journal is the safest place it could possibly live.
